Living and supporting life with stoma
What to eat
There is no restriction on what you can eat even if you have a stoma. Avoid overeating and try to keep a balanced diet. If you are on a diet therapy due to intestinal diseases, you can continue the therapy as before the stoma surgery.
For gastrointestinal stoma, the amount, form, smell, and the gas produced will be affected by what you eat. It depends on what kind of stoma you have or on the individual, but it will be a good idea to observe well how your stoma reacts to food that caused you diarrhea or constipation before the surgery or when you eat something that is generally known to cause diarrhea.
Then, you will be able to control the bowel movement by avoiding foods that give you more gas or give you diarrhea when you don't want that to happen.
